Celtis australis

Celtis australis is a medium-sized tree of Southern Europe, occuring aournd the Mediterranean Basin. It is a thermophile species occuring in mixed deciduous forests and can reach sizeable stem diameters >100 cm. The wood is greyish-white, heavy and elastic. It is fairly resistant to rot and has been used for furniture, instruments, and other wooden objects. It also resprouts vitaly and is used for fuelwood and charcoal production.
Very few herbivore species are reported from this Mediterranean tree species, but including one notable host specialist, the snout butterfly Libythea celtis. The related American tree species C. occidentalis is now widely planted in urban settings in Europe. This has fostered the recent range expansion of the snout butterfly in eastern central Europe.
