Malus sylvestris is a small tree potentially distributed throughout temperate Europe yet exceedingly rare in Europe's forests and woodlands. It is light-demanding and thus often occuring in open forests or along permanent edges. The light reddish brown wood is dense yet shrinks strongly. It can be used for turned objects or fuelwood.
Wild apple and its cultivars are attacked by a rather wide range of herbivores. Most of these are not host specific, but are shared with other deciduous broadleaved trees, notably in the family Rosaceae.
