Picea abies is a tall conifer that is native to Central European mountains as well as Fennoscandinavia. It is moderately shade tolerant, and forms dense canopies in which individuals can reach diameters >100 cm. It is currently one of the most important timber species in Europe. The wood is creamy white, and the boles are usually straight and regular. It can be used for timber construction, pulpwood, furniture and instruments, amongst other uses.
Originally a conifer species of higher latitudes and altitudes, spruce has become one of the most important forest trees especially in central Europe. Together with scots pine, spruce has, among European conifers, the longest list of associated folivores, many of which are considered as serious pests in forestry. While many of the herbivores are shared with other Pinaceae species, included exotic timber trees such as Pseudotsuga menziesii, others are host-specific at least on tree genus level.
