Prunus padus is a small broadleaved tree or shrub and is widely distributed throughout Central and Northern Europe. It is short-lived and able to regenerate vigoroulsy from sprouts. Due to its low dimensions and often shrubby growth form the wood of Prunus padus is of little commercial value.
Bird cherry figures prominently on the host plant list of many folivores, especially in humid forest ecosystems. As with other woody Rosaceae, most of the reported herbivores are not species-specific to that tree, but are rather shared with other rosaceous woody plants or are even broadly opportunistic.
