Sorbus aucuparia

Sorbus aucuparia is a small tree occuring throughout Europe with the exception of the very south of the continent. It is of intermediate shade-tolerance and often occurs as pioneer after disturbance. The wood is reddish-brown, strong, hard and tough. It has been used for tool handles, turned objects and craftwork, yet its overall use as timber species is very limited.
Rowan belongs to the European tree species supporting particularly numerous herbivore species, especially those of higher latitudes or altitudes. Many of its herbivores are specific to the genus Sorbus, or to woody Rosaceae at a broader scale, but some opportunists are also shared with other broadleaved trees and shrubs that accumulate polyphenolics as major defense.
