Sorbus domestica

Sorbus domestica is a medium-sized tree occuring in Central and Southern Europe. It is of intermediate shade-tolerance yet is a poor competitor in the warm-temperate broadleaved forest types it occurs in. The wood is reddish-brown, strong, hard and tough. It can command high prices if available in sizeable dimensions, and is used for carpentry and small objects that have to tolerate considerable amounts of friction (e.g., screws). Other uses include fruit production and ornamental use.
The sorb tree is rare throughout most of its native range. This likely explains the paucity of recorded herbivore affiliations. If planted more extensively, most of the herbivores known from ist congener S. aucuparia are expected to show up as well. Therefore, this tree species is potentially very valuable for biodiversity.
