Sorbus torminalis

Sorbus torminalis is a medium-sized broadleaved tree of Central and Southern Europe. It is fast growing, has intermediate light demand and can reach diameters of >100 cm. The wood is dark-red to brown, fine-grained, dense and has high bending strength. It is one of the most valuable hardwoods of Europe and is mostly used as veneer and in furniture making.
Herbivores on the checker tree are much better documented than on the sorb tree. Nevertheless, numbers of associated insect species are low and its significance for preservation of insect diversity is thus modest.
